The Iran Tragedy

2009-06-26 21:30 by Suvi Alanko (4 comments)

Despite of who might be right and wrong, the thing is that there are people killed, political prisoners taken and citizens scared to be quiet in Iran right now.

I try to explain what is going on in Iran as seen from the faraway Finland.

The text is long so please hop to the topic that interest you.

The background:

I write this text as a private person, not as a representative of ALT. This is written because I see Iranese people suffering because of their hope to see the change.

I have been following situations in Iran for two weeks now and this is a report of events seen trough my eyes. I have been trying to be objective and tried be very carefull not to claim stuffs I'm not sure of as truths. But I believe the truth is still more horryfing than we can imagine.

Will we ever hear the whole story of what really happened? I'm not sure. Right now it seems that brutal force have worked... If you kill many enough people there are nobody brave (or stupid?) enough alive to protest anymore. That seems to be the tactic.

Elections:

After the election in Iran, two weeks ago there were a lot of reversed opinions and also claims the election was a fraud. There also were several weird things in the elections. For example it seems that sitting president were announced as a winner before all the votes were counted etc.

Iranese media took some opinions week after

Nobody(? or not many at least) really knows who would have won rightfully, perhaps it would been the same outcome after another round or so. Perhaps there were no fraud, just some vague stuff or perhaps the winner was someone else than was claimed to be.

Robert Fisk reports about Iran and suggest that Ahmadinejad might have won any way but there was something wrong with counting

Also this Time magazine article about Khamenei may help you to understand some of the complicated politics of Iran with earthly and religious leaders

When media keeps silent, social media talks:

Foreign media has been send home / banned from giving any outlets from the demonstrations and Iran media being silent. At the beginning of the protests Iran authorities claimed that there were only few students rioting for fun. Iranese demonstrators seemed to be bit afraid this all could be kept in silence and not people in other cities than in Tehran would know. Demonstrators on the streets asked in social media how come all the media in Iran were quiet, how come their president said nothing.

Pics of the protests on 17th of June: Street full of people, Hafttir Square, Where is my vote?

This is how we get the knowledge from Iran: by some amateur videos, Twitter feeds, photos taken by mobile phones etc. You can ask how much that can be trusted to. But is it really more objective to trust in the silence ?

These are the kind of news heard from the Iran via Twitter during these weeks:

From peaceful demonstrations to massacre:

Video from 13th June (the first days: less violence, less polices. Notice citizen helping the police in need at the end of the clip)

From the beginning has Iran media claimed this is only few students making some mess on the streets, but all the pics and videos I have seen tell different. I have also heard some claims that foreign nations try to conquer Iran or this is a plot from outside world..

Here is a clip of demonstrations just few days before it got nasty. They are demanding change but they surely are not violent or few

During this week everything has went more violent. It is two weeks after the election as i write this and according to my knowledge the worst day was 24th of June and after 17th or so something happened and everything went more violent. We also got less material from the field after the 24th or actually every day it is fewer and fewer pics and videos.

Even the social media is starting to be silent.. I don't think this is because people have found out they are happy after all. Something else is going on. Have heard the rumors of cutted phone lines, broken computers and all kind of restrictions and censorship from the first weekend.

Neda: There is a story of girl who happened to be on the streets during the demonstrations and got killed. She has been lifted by "the see of green" as example of innocent person suffering in Iran.

Amateur footage / video of Neda

US media articles: Neda in CNN article and at Time magazine

Doctor flees from Iran over Neda killing, Reuters article

This was the situation at the beginning of this week. Today nobody knows the names of the victims anymore. Does anybody even know how many dead there are? Or how many arrested and what are the claimed reasons? Citizens of Iran claim that arrested are tortured to tell the names of twitters, bloggers and other people giving out the information of events.

And not only demonstrators of one opposition leader are out there but also so many others. Families of arrested (or / and) killed are gathered in front of the jails to hear even some news if their loved ones are still alive. Even doctors and staff from hospitals are showing that they don't think this is something to approve.

24th of June people tried to gather to the squares but there were basij (and military?) out there and the news from there tells not only about shooting, beating and gas but even chopping people, war like feeling and trapped people surrounded by armed man in both sides. The material is very few.

Iran Eye Witness of Massacre Lalezar Sq. at Baharestan on CNN / video

But if everything is fair and good in Iran why are foreign reporters and media sent away? Why are diplomats sent away?

About the violence:

Demonstrators have not (seem to be) been violent. At first polices and military refused to use force against their people but letting people march. More people joined and probably it went too well for the demonstrators and Iranian government was afraid of free speech cause very soon it went worse. (or do you see some other possible reason for the change?)

There were rumors of military leaders to be arrested and took away from their positions roughly during 17th of June and so. What happened then? They left Basij out... Basij is not trained military force but some kind of voluntary force working under the control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)

After Basij got to the streets the reports have been not only bad but horryfing: so many people been shot randomly, beat to dead and corps dragged to tracks.

Amnesty & Basij: Amnesty's report, Reuter's news from that

Sea of Green and political situation:

So how many people were on the streets? Figures are very hard to give but demonstrations have been on several cities and during the first week for every night. There are guesses of 2 million people on the streets during one night of the first week.

Here is a election promotion video that certainly is not a documentary as it is described on YouTube but if you wonder where is that "green wave" or "sea of green" stuff coming you'll find it out from here.

This video tells some campaign ideas of Mousavi. Perhaps you want to see it from time stamp 5.50 - 7 to find out why students and workers would want to vote him.

And why women would want to give their vote to Mousavi

"we are against any form of discrimination"

Certainly those videos are propaganda but this all gives the idea of political situation. The sitting president been more strict and conservative while opposition hoping less strict way to see the religion and willing to give women more power in society.

Almost 2 weeks after the election Iran authorities say there will not be revote despite unclarities. At CNN and NY Times

24th of June we heard trough social media that Mousavi & Karroubi, the opposition leaders /presidental candidates were arrested.

This article may also help for understanding the political situation

People in the streets would like to see a change in governing and their everyday living.

Thing said in Twitter: " Government will have demo outside UK and US embassies (Tehran 1979) and call a death for US"

If some of you understands what is this about, please explain me. If their government would do that.. why? Did it happen.. what is going on?

More info

And if this all sounds too clear and easy to understand with all the censorship, at least 3 different kind of police/military troops and two kinds of leaders (religious and earthly).. then you should go to Iran history (which of course explains some of the current situation and the governing party etc.) There is for example the relations to foreign nations. Well deserved suspicious attitude towards United States and all the history of Iran with Saahi, religion, frustration and unfilled promises / careless actions from USA and UN
